During 1718-1720, two missions, a military fortress, and a handful of civilian settlers established a fledgling community in the Spanish province of Texas. It became part of Spain’s vast American empire and part of a northern line of settlements including San Agustín, Florida; Santa Fe, New Mexico; and Los Angeles, Alta California.
